Our yard is at Pecks Hill in Nazeing, a few minutes from junction 26 of the M25. That puts most of north and east London, west Essex and south Hertfordshire inside an easy run — and we go further out into the East of England when the job suits.

Real scaffolds, real postcodes. Everything from a single access tower for a leak inspection to a designed scaffold on a shopping centre.

A shopping centre does not close so a scaffold can go up. This one had to be built around a live retail building with the public moving underneath it, which puts it well outside anything the standard TG20:21 tables cover.

That makes it a designed scaffold: drawings and structural calculations prepared before a single tube was cut, then built to that drawing rather than adjusted on site. Where a site condition meant the drawing could not be followed, it went back to the designer.

Take the roof off a building in Central London and you are gambling on the forecast. This one had a designed temporary roof over it: aluminium beams spanning the building off the scaffold, so nothing landed on the structure below and the trades carried on in the dry.

Sheeting a building over turns the whole scaffold into a sail, so the elevations were built from the start to carry the span, the extra wind load and the tie pattern that comes with it.

Solar installers spend days on a roof carrying panels that are heavy, awkward and easy to break, and most of the risk sits at the roof edge. This school install got continuous edge protection around the working perimeter and access scaffolding to the array.

It also got a scaffold staircase rather than ladders. When a team is going up and down all day with panels and fixings, that is the difference between a programme that runs and one that does not.

A short run north of our Nazeing yard. Roofing contractors needed a protected perimeter to work behind, so the scaffold went up as edge protection across the school roof rather than as a full access scaffold.

Occupied school sites bring their own rules: agreed working hours, the base lift kept secure and ladder access locked off when nobody is on it.

Fascia and soffit works on a house minutes from the yard. The conservatory sat exactly where the scaffold wanted to stand, which is the most common problem on a domestic roofline job.

So it was bridged: beams spanning over the conservatory with the standards landing on solid ground either side, and nothing bearing on the glass or the flat roof. The working lift was set just below the roofline so the fitter could work the whole run without moving ladders.

Scaffolding questions, answered

The questions we get asked most, answered straight. If yours is not here, ring us — we would rather talk it through than have you guess.

There is no honest flat rate — the price depends on how many elevations you need, the height, how long the scaffold stays up, and how easy the site is to get to. We come out, look at the job for free, and send a written quotation with the hire period and everything included spelled out. You will not get a number guessed over the phone.

Call us on 020 8050 1296 and we will tell you what we have free that week. We book the free site visit first, then confirm an erection date with the written quote so you can plan your trades around it. Emergency and reactive work is something we do regularly — if a roof has failed or a building needs making safe, say so when you call.

Yes. If any part of the scaffold sits on the public highway or footpath, the highway authority has to licence it before it goes up. We handle the application, the drawings and the conditions that come with it — including lighting, hoarding and pedestrian protection where the council asks for them.

As long as you need it. We do both short-term hire for a quick roof repair and long-term hire for multi-phase commercial programmes, and we offer up to 8 weeks of free hire time on the initial period (subject to terms). If the job overruns, tell us and we will extend it rather than leave you stuck.

Every scaffold is erected by CISRS-qualified scaffolders — the Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme is the recognised competence scheme for the trade. We also hold CHAS accreditation for health and safety management and Constructionline Gold for supplier verification, which speeds up onboarding on commercial and public-sector sites.

Yes. Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005 a scaffold must be inspected before first use, then at intervals of no more than seven days, and again after anything that could have affected its stability — high winds, an impact, or an alteration. We carry out those inspections and the reports are available to you, your principal contractor or your insurer on request.

It should not. Where a scaffold ties into the building we use the right fixings for the substrate and make good afterwards. Where we cannot tie in — a listed façade, render you do not want drilled — we design a free-standing or buttressed scaffold instead. Tell us at the site visit if there is anything you are worried about.

Constantly. A lot of our work comes from roofers, main contractors, housing associations, managing agents and local authorities who use us job after job. We are used to working to a programme, coordinating with other trades, adapting scaffolds mid-job and dismantling on time.
